What is NASH?

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is an advanced form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver. When this buildup causes inflammation and damage, it is known as NASH and can lead to scarring of the liver. Scarring of the liver is a potentially life-threatening condition called cirrhosis. Diagnosis of NASH

Diagnosis usually begins with a physical examination and review of the patient’s medical history. If NAFLD or NASH is suspected, blood tests are done to check how the liver is working. Imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound may also help.

If NASH is suspected, the patient undergoes a liver biopsy. In this procedure, a small piece of tissue is removed from the liver with a needle and examined under a microscope. This allows doctors to determine if scarring or inflammation of the liver tissue has occurred. Patients are usually sedated during the liver biopsy. The Physicians typically use a special MRI technique called MR-EFF (Elastography Fat Fraction) to determine the percentage of fat and scar present. This non-invasive diagnostic tool eliminates the need for a liver biopsy.
