What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic (long-term) disease that affects the airways of the lungs. The airways are the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma, your airways can become inflamed and temporarily narrow. This makes it harder for air to flow out of your airways when you exhale.
Asthma is a chronic disease affecting 1 in 13 Americans.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 13 people in the US have asthma. It affects people of all ages and often begins in childhood. Certain things such as pollen, exercise, viral infections, and cold air can cause or exacerbate asthma symptoms. These are known as asthma triggers. When the symptoms get worse, it is called an asthma attack.
